THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has instructed members not to support any candidate who decides to go independent out of frustration.

UPND Copperbelt Province Information and Publicity Secretary, Lawrence Mwanza, said doing so would mean that the members were going against the party objectives for the August 12 elections.

Mr Mwanza said in Kitwe that it was important for the members to support the adopted candidates only.

He said the democratic adoption process was well followed and that all the adopted candidates had been scrutinised by the party leaders at national and other levels.

“All UPND members who contested primaries are quality leaders and there is no way the party would have adopted wrong candidates among quality leaders.

“We see no reason why you are demonstrating over the adoption of certain candidates, a situation that we will not allow to continue as the provincial leadership,” he said.

Mr Mwanza also warned members that were allegedly accepting gifts from the ruling party to cause confusion in the province to immediately stop or risk being disciplined.

He said the provincial leadership would soon start enforcing disciplinary measures on erring members who would be found going against the will of the party.

Mr Mwanza said the UPND had information that the ruling party had decided to corrupt some youths in selected constituencies, wards and districts to demonstrate against the adopted members.
