PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says his government will continue working closely with the church to end poverty and improve the living standards of the people.
Mr Lungu said this in a speech read by PF national mobilisation committee treasurer Bizwell Mutale at the 19th Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Biannual Synod meeting in Lundazi.
He said the church remains a key partner in ending poverty among the country’s citizens, the reason why the party in Government was going to continue supporting it in its evangelical and other poverty alleviating programmes.
President Lungu said the church has not only provided spiritual guidance but also supplemented Government efforts in the provision of education and health care to the less privileged in society.
He commended the CCAP for providing safe drinking water through the department of shallow wells which has drilled over 5, 000 boreholes countrywide.
Mr Lungu appreciated church for coming up with various programmes including the empowerment of women groups through the village savings loans.
The President said Government was happy that through this help, women have managed to become self-reliant, and able to educate their children and provide for their families. He also appealed to the church to preach unity and love to end all forms of tribal segregation especially during elections.
He noted the need to abide by the ‘One Zambia One Nation’ motto which aims at uniting all Zambians despite their tribal lineage.
Outgoing CCAP Synod Moderator Chizason Chunda said the church was ready to work with the government of the day to develop the country.
Reverend Chunda said the church has embarked on many projects which are contributing positively to the development of the country.
