FISH INDUSTRY IN BUSINESS FRAMEWORK REVIEW

THE Business Regulatory Review Agency (BRRA) has embarked on an exercise to review regulatory frameworks in the fisheries sub-sector to promote growth in the industry.

The exercise is also meant to ensure that the regulatory frameworks serve a legitimate purpose.

BRRA Director and Chief Executive Officer, Sharon Sichilongo, said the agency was aware that the fisheries subsector in Zambia was increasingly becoming an important component of Zambia’s economy.
Ms Sichilongo said the sector had tremendous potential and capacity to contribute to poverty alleviation and to increasing the socio-economic status of most people, thereby contributing to the economic growth of the country.

She said this at a consultative meeting for the fisheries regulatory environment in Lusaka this week.
“Zambia is endowed with abundant water resources in the form of rivers, lakes and swamps, which provide the basis for growth of the fish industry. Reports indicate that the demand for fish for local consumption is more than current supply,” Ms Sichilongo said.
She observed that there were overlaps in legislation governing the fisheries sub-sector, which impact negatively on the business regulatory environment and increase the cost of doing business.
The agency, she said, was mandated to advise regulatory agencies on, among others, those overlaps and promote efficient and cost effective regulation of business.
Ms Sichilongo said the agency was seeking to eliminate unjustified existing regulatory frameworks and advised Government on regulatory matters.
The agency, she said, remained alive to the fact that a diversified, sustainable and competitive economy was anchored on, among others, a conducive business environment.
“This meeting is aimed at consulting stakeholders on the challenges that affect the sub-sector and recommend interventions that would promote the sustainable growth.
“I therefore, wish to solicit for your expert input to this exercise. Your submissions will form a solid basis for the comprehensive review of the subsector. I look forward to your fruitful participation,” Ms Sichilongo said.
