PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu yesterday led hun- dreds of Zambians to
lay wreaths at the Freedom Statue in Lusaka in commem- orating the country’s 56th in- dependence anniversary.
This year’s independence was commemorated under the theme “Zambia at 56: One Land One Nation, Building Our Future Proud and Free.
The President was the first to lay a wreath at the statue and later Defence Chiefs and diplomats followed in laying their respective wreaths in remembrance of the depart- ed heroes and heroines who fought for Zambia’s indepen- dence.
President Lungu, who arrived at the Freedom Statue around 09:10 hours was given a gun salute mounted by the Zambia Army.
This year’s independence was commemorated in differ- ent way under the new normal due to the outbreak of Covid-19.
The celebration was strictly by invitation to safeguard people from contracting the Covid-19.
And Colonel Dr Macron Nyambe in his message to the Zambian people, called for unity of purpose for the bet- terment of the country.
Meanwhile, President Lun- gu bestowed the President’s Medal for Gallantry to John Si- ame who exhibited bravery on April 26, 2015, risking his life when he rescued eight people who were drowning on Lake Mweru Wantipa.
The Head of State also be- stowed the Order of the Eagle of Zambia Second division to James Mapoma for his im- mense contributions to the country’s socio-economic de- velopment and governance
through a lengthy career in the civil service and ministe- rial level.
Mr Mapoma was one of the first crop of highly educated Zambians that saw him work for 14 years under the Brit- ish colonial rule and another 28 years after Zambia gained independence and served in various positions.
Paul Chapuswike, was be- stowed with the Order of the Grand Companion of Free- dom, third division for his contribution to the liberation struggle.
Mr Lungu honoured Harri- et Miyato posthumously with the Order of distinguished service, first division for her dedication and commitment to the teaching service and role in the establishment of the Zambia Open Community Schools to promote access to education to orphans and vul- nerable children.
President Lungu also honoured Johannes Leach with the President’s Insignia of Recognition for dedicating his life to serving the community through the church in Chavuma.
