PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu is eligible to stand in 2021 as the Constitutional Court has already ruled in his favour, veteran politician Sikota Wina has said.
Mr Wina said there was need for the country to respect the institutions of governance, hence the need to move on and focus on other issues.
“We have set up institutions of governance in the country for ourselves to guide us through difficult constitutional matters and therefore should be respected,” Mr Wina said.
He said the Constitutional Court had already ruled on the matter and it was important for the nation to move on and focus on other important national matters.
“We have a duty to develop this country and we cannot continue dwelling on the matter that has been already addressed,” Mr Wina said.
Meanwhile, former PF Muchinga Province chairperson, Alex Simuwelu, said it was shameful that some opposition aligned lawyers were deliberately misleading Zambians on President Lungu’s eligibility.
Mr Simuwelu said the Zambian constitution was clear on what constitutes a presidential term of office. He said it was important for lawyers to guide the nation on legal matters.
“What we are seeing now is very shameful and uncalled for, how can lawyers that understand the law continue misleading the nation on straight forward issues because of the political alignment,” he wondered.
