Over 1, 000 kg fish seized

OVER 1, 044 kilogrammes of fresh fish and 300 kg of dry fish has been impounded in Choma since the commencement of the fish ban, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has announced.

Choma District Fisheries Officer, John Kaira, said that five suspects were picked for being in possession of fish without any supporting document and have appeared in court.

Mr Kaira expressed disappointment that some traders had continued selling fish from natural water bodies even when the ban was still in force.

He has since warned those still selling fish illegally that the law will be applied on them once identified.

Mr Kaira said in an interview that the fish ban was aimed at allowing the fish to breed and that the fishermen would benefit more as they would catch more stocks to boost their businesses once the ban was lifted.

He said officers in the district would continue conducting patrols to curb illegal fish trading during the fish ban period. Mr Kaira called on traders in Choma to possess the right documents for them to trade  in fish or risk having the fish confiscated.
