EIGHT employees of Chat Breweries in Luanshya yesterday escaped death after the boiler at the plant exploded.

Copperbelt police commissioner Charity Katanga confirmed the accident.

She said her office received a report of an industrial accident which occurred around 01:57 hours injuring some of the employees with burns and fractured bones.

“Dingi Mugode, the marketing manager reported that there was an accident at the brewery which left eight people injured.

“Of the injured, three were observed and discharged while five are still admitted to Roan and Thompson Hospitals respectively,” she said.

This is the second time that the brewery has recorded a similar accident.

Last year a pressure cooker exploded leaving one dead and injuring nine workers.

Meanwhile, a man in Chililabombwe has died after being beaten to death by members of the public for stealing five heads of cabbage.

Ms. Katanga identified the deceased as Gershom Mulenga of Kakoso Township.

She said Mulenga was caught stealing cabbage from a garden when members of the public pounced on him.

Ms. Katanga said the incident happened in the early hours of June 14, 2017.

She said the deceased was caught with five heads of cabbage which he had stolen before members of the public lynched him.

Ms. Katanga said a Good Samaritan rescued him from the mob and took him to the police where his condition worsened and was taken to hospital where he later died.
