KITWE Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe has been challenged to account for the money which well-wishers have been contributing towards the construction of pavers on Independence Avenue in Kitwe.
Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Youth Chairman Charles Kabwita said the Mayor should explain to the residents how much he had raised from well-wishers contributing to the project of pavers
Speaking in an interview in Kitwe yesterday, Mr Kabwita said the Mayor should explain to the residents how much he hads raised from well-wishers contributing to the project of pavers, name of contractors and other details.
Mr Kabwita, who is former PF ward councillor for Chimwemwe, was among the previous crop of councillors who were reportedly involved in the illegal allocation of land and were pursued and locked up by the police.
He demanded for accountability from the mayor on the pavers project because his party was fighting corruption and does not want to steal from people.
“Am challenging the Mayor to tell the residents of Kitwe, how much he has raised from well-wishers who have been contributing to the project of pavers? He should tell the people how much he has raised, how much has been spent and which contractor was doing the pavers project,” Mr Kabwita said.
But Mr Kang’ombe said the council has raised K233, 000 from Well-wishers and was being kept in the land development account of the Kitwe City Council (KCC).
The mayor said the money raised from well-wishers was not enough to carry out the project of putting up pavers.
He said the local authority was thinking of calling for a meeting for all well-wishers who contributed to discuss and agree how the K233, 000 they contributed should be used.
“We raised K233, 000 from well-wishers and the money is still in the land development account of the council. No single ngwee has been spent from that money. We will call for a meeting to discuss how we should use that money,” Mr Kang’ombe has said.
