THE country is on high alert against the spread of bird flu from neighbouring countries, Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Michael Katambo, has said.
Mr. Katambo warned of the resurgence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe and said that the virus was contagious, with variable viruses that were widespread in birds.
He said HPAI viruses could kill up to 90 to 100 percent of the flock and cause epidemics that could spread rapidly and devastate the poultry industry, and consequently restrict trade.
In a notice issued yesterday, the minister said the virus could affect mammals including human beings who came into contact with the infected poultry.
Mr. Katambo urged the public to report any abnormal deaths of chickens, ducks and any other birds to the nearest Department of Veterinary Services office and called on officers at the borders to be vigilant.
“With immediate effect Zambia has put a ban on the importation of live birds and poultry products from Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe and all affected countries,” he said.
He said only the importation of breeding stock would be allowed from HPAI-free countries after a thorough assessment.
Mr. Katambo has directed border officers to ensure that no such products were allowed in the country as it would put the country at risk.
