POLITICIANS and political leaders should not earn cheap political mileage on a national calamity such as the recent acts of arson at city market, says Youth Aid chairperson Kachenga Chungu.

Mr. Chungu said the recent turn of events were unfortunate and described them as acts of economic sabotage by distractors with ill intent meant to make the ordinary Zambians suffer.

In an interview yesterday, he said it was no coincidence that acts of arson had continued to happen simultaneously and in a similar fashion and circumstances in the country.

The youth leader has urged political players not to politicise the calamity with an aim of gaining political mileage at the expense of the loss of the source of livelihood of many citizens who solely depended on city market.

“The recent sad turn of events are unfortunate and are a pure act of economic sabotage by distractors aimed at making the ordinary Zambians suffer.

“I also appeal to politicians and political leaders not to try and earn cheap and useless political mileage on a national calamity such as this,” he said.

He expressed hope that security wings were working round the clock on the presidential directive to find all wrongdoers and ensure justice was done.

Mr. Chungu has called on the nation to unite in prayer and for the people involved to desist from such acts as the law would soon catch up with them.

He encouraged the church to preach love, peace and unity in accordance with the principles of the Bible and desist from issuing politically driven statements because they had potential of bringing about division.

Mr. Chungu saluted commercial banks who have committed themselves to help rebuild city market and urged more well-wishers to come forth as the damage was extensive and a huge cost.
