THE dry spell that is being experienced in Lusaka and some parts of the country will not affect the water supply in the city, Lusaka Water and Sewerage company (LWSC) Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Patson Phiri has said.
Mr Phiri told the Daily Nation that the water utility company was prepared to supply water to all Lusaka residents throughout the year because the dry spell would not affect them.
“We have had the worst drought in the past like in 1996 which affected the whole country and there was really no rain but the supply was not affected because of the level at which the pumps are which is 13 meters deep,” he said.
Mr Phiri explained that in terms of boreholes the utility company had industrial ones which were about 200 meters deep saying the water utility firm did not expect any negative effect arising from the poor rainfall pattern.
He assured Lusaka residents that LWSC was doing everything possible to ensure that there was enough water supply adding that the construction of the second Lolanda treatment plant project in Kafue by the Chinese once completed will improve water supply.
“We will have a 50-50 arrangement where a lot of customers will feed from Kafue so when the Chinese project is done we are hoping to have a lot of connectivity and a lot of our customers will be connected to the Kafue source let them be patient we are on top of things we will not fail them going forward,” he said.
Mr Phiri explained that the previous year the water supply was not very good in most parts of the city because the utility company had intensified with their construction works.
He said most of the time they were not able to supply water because they did not have the ability to supply while they were shutting down machines to continue with construction works.
