…he was pinned with a gun to his head

By Nation Reporter

FORMER Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili was shoved down with a gun to his head, handcuffed and bundled in a police van by South African anti-theft and anti-robbery unit as a suspected burglar in Johannesburg.

This was in a movie like drama that happened when South African Police surrounded a local restaurant where Mr Kambwili was spotted taking a cup of coffee by the victim of a break-in at a shop.

According to information obtained by the Daily Nation Newspaper, Mr Kambwili was identified as the suspect allegedly accused of breaking in and stealing laptops as captured by CCTV security cameras.

A source at the Zambian Mission in South Africa confirmed Mr Kambwili’s ordeal.  The then minister who fought against police in trying to identify himself as a Cabinet minister was forced to the floor with a gun to his head and arrested as a suspect in the theft of laptops, before he was taken to Four Ways Police Station where he was detained for about four hours.

According to the burglary victim, a muscular figure in short sleeves shirt and shorts was captured on CCTV as the same thief and burglar that had stolen his laptops which evidence was supported by a video footage he surrendered to the Police.

The white shop owner swore that the suspect, later identified as Chishimba Kambwili, from Zambia was the person captured in the video.

The source said this was sometime in 2015, when Mr Kambwili was in Johannesburg, South Africa  in FourWays when a specialised police unit sealed off the area and bundled him up in a police van before he was taken away to the police station.

“I am a Cabinet Minister in Zambia, I am a minister mwebantu!” he screamed

The suspect was locked him up for a few hours until officials from Zambia’s High Commission to South Africa came to bail him out, pleading with the officers that it was a case of mistaken identity.

According to the video footage, an almost identical burly figure to Mr Kambwili, broke into the heavily secured shops and stole the laptops, but the Zambian mission pleaded immunity for the Cabinet minister who was later released after a few hours ordeal!
