A FUND-RAISING walk by Matero’s Constituency Kapwepwe ward from Matero to Lilanda has raised K4, 400 towards the purchase of furniture for Lilanda Police Post, says Patriotic Front area councillor Patrick Salubusa.
The event was graced by President Edgar Lungu’s daughter Tasila, who is Nkoloma Ward councillor and saw the active participation of the police led by Matero police station Officer-In-Charge, Raphael Moono.
Mr. Salubusa said the fundraising walk dubbed “Komboni fundraising” was flagged off by Ms. Lungu and saw her carry a fundraising box from Mellisa Super Market in Matero through Commonwealth Road to Lilanda market before connecting to Lilanda Police Post via Antelope Road. The civic leader said the fundraising venture raised K 4, 400 towards the purchase of furniture for Lilanda Police Post ahead of its official opening this month.
“Our appreciative thanks goes to the PF government for building this police post at a cost of more than K 600,000 and since the government has done its part it’s our turn to buy furniture so that we have a say as a community,” he said.
He said residents of Matero constituency in general and Kapwepwe Ward in particular were visibly excited to see the President’s daughter asking for donations from motorists, passengers, marketeers and pedestrians.
Mr. Salubusa said residents of Kapwepwe Ward were elated with the initiative which saw them contribute any amount towards the same with some school boys and girls bringing one Kwacha and fifty ngwee coins towards the same.
He thanked the people who participated in the walk and the Government for constructing the new Lilanda Police Post.
Mr. Salubusa assured the police that by next week all the furniture needed for smooth operations of the police post would be procured using the money raised through various fundraising ventures so that the old building was quickly demolished and a positive image given to Lilanda Police Post.
Ms. Lungu urged the residents of Kapwepwe Ward to guard the new police post as well as the peace the country has been enjoying for many years.
She said events like what happened in her Ward where the market was gutted as well as the fire which swept through city market shows that some unscrupulous people were taking the country’s peace for granted.
Ms. Lungu has implored the community to work with the police as they were the eyes and ears of the service.
“The police should be our all-weather friend and I am therefore excited that you the people of Kapwepwe Ward are working so well with the police,” Ms. Lungu said.
Earlier, the Officer-In-Charge assured the Kapwepwe Community that his office will continue engaging the community and that the success of the fundraising walk has prompted him to think of an anti-crime sensitization walk in Matero constituency.
