Nothing wrong with Antonio Mwanza joining PF

Dear editor,

A lot has been said about Antonio Mwanza, the former Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) spokesperson joining the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Mr. Mwanza recently resigned from FDD and joined PF. Some people have supported his decision and others criticised him.

Politics being what it is, people are at liberty and have the freedom of association as enshrined in the Zambian Constitution, the supreme law of the land. Freedom of association entails that a person has the right to join any organisation of her or his choice including political parties.

Mr. Mwanza is not the first person to resign from political party and joins another.

Moreover, we have had politicians crossing from one political party to another. It could be either  from the ruling party or the opposition.

The underlying factor is that these politicians should serve the interest of  Zambians regardless of political affiliation.

Having said that, I would safely say that there is nothing wrong with  Antonio Mwanza joining PF. This is the nature of politics and you cannot rule out this fact. PHIRI, Lusaka.

Congratulations to President elect George Weah

Dear editor,

I wish to congratulate soccer legend and former FIFA world footballer of the year, George Weah on being elected as President of Liberia.

The 51 year old Weah succeeded Sirleef Hellen Johnson, after winning the polls in a presidential  runoff beating former Vice President, Joseph Boakai. The polls were held on December 26, 2017. President Weah garnered 61.5% of the vote and his political rival, Boakai garnered 38.5% of the votes.

President Weah was sworn in as head of State on Monday January 22, 2018. President Weah is a former striker who plied his trade at AS Monaco Football Club among other prominent clubs in the world.

Prior to his inauguration, President Weah played football and his side, Weah All Stars Football Club beat Liberian Army 2-1.

He clad his traditional jersey number 14 and he scored a goal much to the amusement of the crowds who turned up to watch the match.

Zambian soccer legend and 1988 African footballer of the year, Kalusha Bwalya was one of the notable invited guests to witness President Weah’s inauguration held in  Monrovia at Samuel Doe Stadium. I wish President Weah all the best as he governs Liberia.

 ELEMIYA PHIRI, Lusaka.

Open letter to the inspector-general of Zambia police

Dear Editor

Kindly allow me to air my grave concerns regarding the missing or stolen rails in Luanshya.

Though it has taken me too long to complain about the missing rails here in Luanshya, I have really failed to understand the whole episode.

To start with the railway line started off from right inside Luanshya Mine and went up to Ndola town.

To-date, the rails on this so called railway line not even a single rail is lying or available.

The following are now my the serious questions which someone must answer and tell the nation the truth without fear and favour and I ask as follows:-

Can someone convince me or the nation that there was not even a single security guard from G4 Security Services  on duty when these rails were being removed or stolen. G4 Security Services were the ones guarding Luanshya Mine premises?

Can someone again convince me or the nation that from Luanshya Mine premises to Ndola in between there not even a single Zambia Policeman who saw that rails were being stolen or removed?

Can the Mine Police Commandant or Chief Security Officer from G4 Security Services or Zambia Police Commanding Officer for Luanshya Central Police explain if ever he never saw anyone removing or stealing these rails?

Can the Station Master at Zambia Railways Ndola explain if ever he never received any information or complain that rails were being removed or stolen?

The rails are very big, heavy and long and I do not think that someone could carry these on his shoulders. To tell the truth somewhere somehow someone must have been behind and also people from these security wings must have known that such a thing was going on in Luanshya up to Ndola railway station.

As a concerned citizen I humbly request the security wings to investigate thoroughly with the Republican President well informed of the progress with investigations.

Such matters must not die a natural death.

Our children in Luanshya do not know how the train looks like.  Thank you God bless.

Chester  Kalunga
