Why are lecturers disregarding health concerns
Dear Editor,
I believe that Professor Nkandu Luo was right to insist that universities should be opened only when the ministry of Health says so.
Considering the number of students that are in these institutions, it is a serious matter whether or not the institutions are opened.
Prof Luo has shown concern and this should be respected.
Lecturers should stop agitating for opening when they can not guarantee the health of the students. If a disaster was to occur at the universities, it is government and the minister who would be held responsible. So let us give her chance to make sure the institutions are cleaned. We should all be happy that she is fighting for institutions to be clean. Chanda, Lusaka

Let’s check our politics
Dear Editor,
THE kind of politics being practiced in Zambia at the moment leave much to be desired. Politics is supposed to be in simple terms about distributing wealth and the resources of the country equitably among the citizens.
We can’t be all be directly involved in this process and that’s why we have politicians and other technocrats to do this on behalf of the populace. But right now all citizens are seeing is rebellion and politics of insults and politicising of every issue – progressive or not.
It does not matter who is in State House or who is in authority at a particular time. Even the Holy Bible is very clear on this in: Roman 13: 1, Roman 13: 1-5, Hebrews 13: 17, Romans 13:2 and 1 Peter 2:13-15. Those in authority rule over us and there is no rule except that from God. But what is happening in Zambia is not in accordance with these biblical principles right now.
There is so much rebellion and that’s why instead of progressing as the country, we seem to be stalling. God hates rebellion and confusion, let be there be harmony in the nation.
Being in the opposition does not mean being rebellious, far from it. That’s not even democracy!
Those in power may makes mistakes, but where they succeed, there is no need for rebellion, and profane language against them. Those in the opposition should take heed.
Why rebel over every decision, every development because everyone wants to be in State House. Looking at what is happening in the political arena now, we are slowly are simply drifting into a rebellious nation and let’s be careful about this. The Church must quickly come in and help on this issue. God is above all else including the economy.
Rebelling and insulting those in authority is a sin and not democracy as some people think. Let them read the Bible and understand further, if not let the clergy help on this, they know better.
The children of Israel rebelled against God and we know the consequences in the desert. Politicians take heed. Peace loving citizen LUSAKA

Lumumba road is a disaster
Dear Editor,
This is for the Road Development Agency (RDA) and the promised rehabilitation of Lumumba road. If the work cannot start immediately, then something must be done to reduce the suffering that motorists are being subjected.
That road is now a disaster waiting to happen. It is not fair that motorists who pay so much in road tax and other user fees, are being subjected to a road that at best has been described as death trap.
At what point is government, through the relevant authorities, going to see that the road should be closed and be redone. The kind of trenches that have developed on this road are a nightmare.
Even trucks are struggling to negotiate the various trenches that are now littered along the road. As for small cars, it is dangerous for anyone to venture on the road at all.
Some cars get stuck inside the holes that now act like traps.
What should motorists do for government to know that the situation is grave. Surely, should the President visit Lumumba, for the road to be worked on.

Failed civic leadership a source of concern
Dear Editor,
There are so many things that Civic Leaders can do to help Government than expecting everything from the treasury.
Such things like patching unpassable roads and drainage clearing in this rain season is a source of concern by many residents in most communities and Civic Leaders should take the challenge.
One wonders whether the Civic Leaders we voted for suddenly hibernated to another planet where they cant see what us their bosses are grappling with.
It is with the aforesaid that despite the shortcomings of President Zuma, the South African Constitution is more advanced where an elected official can be recalled by the party and replaced immediately without any cost to the nation.
No wonder, they have moved a step ahead of most African Countries despite coming out of apartheid to gain independence later than most Countries.
I feel it is high time our Constitution was revisited to embed recalling non-performing Civic Leaders for the sake of moving the Country forward.
It is unfortunate that most Civic Leaders have become absent landlords despite drawing salaries and allowances.
Interestingly but surprisingly, Councillors who never used to get paid before the last elections prior to amending the constitution were even working for the people than the current crop, putting pressure on the presidency.
Most streets in Chingola can be patched in collaboration with the community members and corporate entities without waiting for the contractors to come back after the rains.
But our civic leaders have turned a blind eye to this or don’t just know their role, to the disappointment of the masses.
This should also serve as a lesson for us that next time we should not vote with our stomachs but brains and never on political lines but credibility.
If previous Councillors who never used to get paid could do some community works diligently, what excuse should these ones getting paid give to us apart from just failure?
