POLICE have charged Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili for threatening violence on Chinese nationals in Luanshya, Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga said yesterday.

Ms. Katanga noted that the act by Mr Kambwili was a violation contrary to section 91 1A CAP 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Addressing the press at her office at Police provincial headquarters in Ndola, she said Mr Kambwili together with four others on a date and time unknown but between January 26 and 27 in Luanshya met and threatened violence that any Chinese national who was seen around Luanshya should be stoned.

Ms. Katanga noted that the directive was given to the residents in Luanshya by Mr Kambwili because the mine was recruiting miners elsewhere instead of recruiting local residents.

She noted this was a serious act because from the situation at the meeting place, it was apparent that there was going to be violence.

“They have been warned and cautioned in relation to the issue and expect the members of the public to abide by the Public Order Act.

“All those who will sit and propose violence will not be tolerated and so the police will be on firm ground for security reasons to turn down such applications, we want peace and tranquility in our country,” Ms. Katanga warned.

And speaking to journalists after being questioned by Police, Mr Kambwili warned that the provincial minister and others had started a war against him.

“I want to warn the Copperbelt Minister, Luanshya Mayor as well as the Luanshya district commissioner that this war they have started against me for speaking for the miners will see a bitter end,” he cautioned.

Mr. Kambwili expressed displeasure over the routine police summons and said they were all tactics by the government to intimidate him.

Mr. Kambwili’s driver Alex, a Mr. Mukuka, National Union of Mines and Allied Workers’ Adam Zulu, former PF Roan constituency chairperson Dolphins Kasonde, former PF Roan constituency information publicity secretary Charles Mulenga all appeared for questioning in Ndola.
