SECURITY has been stepped up around Zambia’s largest health institution following apparent attempts to blow up the million dollar oxygen plant at the University Teaching Hospital a fortnight ago.

UTH public relations manager Natali Mashikolo said there was a general raise in security around the institution to secure the place from criminals and other unlawful activities.

She said with the country in a threatened state of emergency, the hospital has raised security around its facilities.

“We have increased security patrols around the hospital following the raised of security around the country. The invocation of Article 31 means as an institution we comply in line with maintaining and preventing criminal activities which could endanger public life and property,” she said.

Two week ago, Sate House announced that the security wings were successfully implementing the invocation of Article 31 with the arrest of some unscrupulous people with intention of causing damage to public property including some people found with combustible material within the UTH grounds.

Police have remained tight-lipped about the threatened state of emergency that has given them more powers to investigate and follow-up suspected breach of peace and public security under Article 31.

Ms Mashikolo indicated in an interview that security persons at the institution were on red alert and members of the public must not be surprised with impromptu on-the-spot checks on their vehicles and baggage.
