GOVERNMENT remains committed to ensuring that no child is abused, neglected or subjected to any degrading way including those living on the streets, says Solwezi District Commissioner Rosemary Kamalonga.
Ms Kamalonga said Government will continue to enforce the existing laws which protect children.She warned that individuals who causes children to be on the streets will be made to account for their misdeeds in line with the provisions of the laws.
She said street life created extreme vulnerability to violence, exploitative and hazardous labour, sex-work and child trafficking.
“It is for this reason that the Patriotic Front government is working hard in ensuring that no child turns to street life because children on the streets are faced with a lot of challenges in accessing key services such as education, health and protection systems among others,” Ms Kamalonga said.
She was speaking during a feeding programme for orphans and vulnerable children organised by Solwezi Community Radio Station.
She called for stronger family ties if the number of vulnerable children can be reduced ,stating that most children run away from homes because of poverty, violence, abuse and neglect due to the demise of their parents or guardians.
Ms Kamalonga has since urged all Zambians to join Government in ensuring that no child sleeps, works or makes the street a place of livelihood.
Solwezi Community radio station manager Besa Katongo said the programme was aimed at making the children feel the sense of belonging and be part of society.
