OUR CRITICISM OF POLITICAL PRONOUNCEMENTS IS NOT PERSONAL BUT PREMISED ON CRITICAL THINKING

Dear Editor,

I KNOW a lot of people were unhappy that we pushed the UPND very hard to explain its political pronouncements. Well, if not properly explained, political statements such as: “Bally Will Fix It” & “More Money In Your Pockets” …create a people that sings “Boma Iyanganepo,” waiting for the government to deliver essential goods and services on its doorsteps.

But these, usually, useless slogans, in terms of realisable development, win elections because they are attached to unrealistic deliverables which salivate the majority hungry voters who, rarely, have the ability to question the how part.

But a people equipped with critical thinking skills will ask inquisitive questions, point out lack of or faulty evidence, ask for missing data, question sources of information, or shed light on fallacies in any political pronouncements. An average Zambian electorate may not have the ability to see fallacies in a politician’s desperate political propaganda.

The fact that the Patriotic Front government chose a useless campaign message does not translate into the UPND possessing a superior development agenda. We shall criticise government policies, on this page using logic, not emotions. But as I had earlier stated, we do not exist to criticise for the sake of it, so where certain policies are great, we will be challenging the opposition’s counter arguments for their logical premises.
