ZABS OFFERS TO ASSIST IMPROVE HYGIENE IN MARKETS

By NATION REPORTER

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has welcomed the removal of political cadres from markets and other public places and has offered to support local authorities as they work towards improving hygiene levels in the public markets.

ZABS Executive Director, Manuel Mutale said they were ready to guide councils how to implement the Zambian Standard (ZS) 1133 Operational and Hygienic requirements for Public Markets.

Mr Mutale said ZABS would play a key role in helping councils to uplift the hygiene levels.

He said maintaining a conducive environment for traders and consumers against food and water borne diseases could be achieved if the requirements of the standard were well implemented.

This is contained in a statement obtained by the Daily Nation.

“As the local authorities are working towards improving the management of public markets, our proposal to the town clerks and council secretaries is that they access the ZS 1133 Operational and Hygienic requirements for public markets,” Mr Mutale said.

He said the standard sets out the requirements for cleaning and sanitation, waste management, general food hygiene, pest control among others which would help uplift the hygiene levels of markets around the country once implemented.

Mr Mutale said ZABS was ready to provide capacity building through training the local authorities on how to implement the requirements of the standard once they were bought.

He said that the removal of cadres from public markets was a welcome move as it would enable a smooth implementation of the standard in as far as cleaning, sanitation and waste management was concerned.
