ELECTION OF NELLY MUTTI ELATES PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the election of the first ever female speaker marks a great day for the country and for women.


Speaking when the newly elected speaker, Prominent Lawyer Mutti and her first and second deputy speaker presented themselves before the President for Approbation ceremony, President Hichilema said the election of a female speaker was a great achievement.


“For the first time in the history of this country, we have a female madam speaker. I think that is a huge achievement for the country and we are all delighted about that. We wish you the best in executing your duties to the nation. Deputy speaker is also female. We wish you the best as well. It has been speakers male for many years. Great day for our country. Great day for our women,” President Hichilema said.


“I won’t say much because this is an independent arm of government. The important thing is no matter how independent we are, we work as a collective to serve the people of Zambia to make laws for the people.”


And President Hichilema said laws must be made for making the lives of citizens easier.
“Sometimes that house has been use to make laws that block citizens in enjoying their rights. We do not expect this team to do that. Independence is assured in the constitution. We will remember that,” President Hichilema said.


“Remember, we occupy these offices because of the people. Laws we make must make the lives of our people easier so that they can advance themselves. Protect citizens at times. If laws are against the people I think this house should have ability to amend those laws.”


The National Assembly has since adjourned awaiting the ceremonial opening of first session of 13th National Assembly on September 10.
