KASEMPA MAN JAILED 3 YEARS FOR THEFT

Kasempa magistrate, Evans Yikona has sentenced a man to three years imprisonment with hard labor for stealing solar batteries at a rural health center.

Magistrate Yikona disclosed that the offender voluntarily admitted the case without wasting the courts time.

This is in a matter where Richard Kalyata, in his early 20’s , charged with the offence of breaking into a building and committing a felony there in.

Particulars of the offence are that on 1st September 2021, Kalyata broke into Mukunashi rural health center and stole four batteries valued at K10, 000).

Delivering his judgement Magistrate Yikona told the offender that his action deprived the entire community of Mukunashi.

“The batteries which you stole are for the benefit of the people of Mukunashi, you wanted to deprive the entire people of Mukunashi,” he added.

The court said it is unfortunate that one can steal from a health center thereby frustrating government efforts.

“Government spends a lot of money trying to better the lives  of people in Mukunashi by making sure that the health center is stocked will necessary equipment,” he added.

In mitigation the offender pleaded with the court to exercise maximum lenience as he was a first time offender and promised to become a committed Christian.

However, passing his sentence Magistrate Yikona handed Richard Kalyata a three years sentence with hard labor so that he can reflect on his actions. – ZANIS
