NEW SPEAKER NELLY MUTTI ON SPOTLIGHT
By ANDREW MUKOMA
ZAMBIANS have higher esteem and expectations from the country’s first female National Assembly Speaker Nelly Muti, Zambia for Unity, Peace and Development-(ZUPED) president Ronnie Jere says
Mr Jere said it was gratifying that in the history of the country, a female Speaker would lead and oversee the proceedings of the house.
He told the Daily Nation in Livingstone that because of that fact, Zambians have higher expectations in her performance.
Mr Jere said Ms Mutti is a seasoned lawyer who built her name in the profession and that that must continue in building the country.
“It is a gratification for the country. This is the first time we have a female speaker in Zambia and I must say that the president is on the right in the promotion of women in leadership.
“We want to urge her to ensure that rules and laws come from the people not from MPs and not against the people. “It is good not just for Zambia but for the region. Let her not fail to discharge her duties because if she fails then it means women will not be trusted in leadership. We had a first female Chief Justice and she worked very well and as a country, Zambia is leading in the region when it it comes to leadership,” he said
