POLICE SWEEP OUT CADRES FROM MARKETS, BUS STATIONS

POLICE have set up teams of officers in main markets and bus stations across the country to completely eradicate cadreism. Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo said this follows reports of some groups of criminals who had continued to harass innocent citizens while masking themselves as UPND cadres.

M s . Katongo says the o f f i c e r s who are both from the police and other local authorities are vigilant and will ensure all criminals are brought to book. She has also urged the public to report all people masquerading as UPND cadres and collecting money from them. Mrs. Katongo said that the Presidential directive to end cadreism in markets and bus stations will be implemented.

Political cadres have resurfaced in some markets in Lusaka, barely a two weeks after the council started taking over operations in trading sites and bus stations. Some traders at New Soweto market have said the cadres have come back, under UPND colours. The cadres are reported to be charging different amounts of money, some in the name of being council officers

Earleir, UPND Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa said those doing so and extorting money from traders are doing so at their own peril. Mr. Mweetwa said the party and government would not support wrong doing, further challenging the police to be on the lookout for would-be offenders and ensure the law takes its course. – ZNBC
