THIRD TERM DEBATE MISPLACED – PAC

By KETRA KALUNGA
THE debate on the third term is misplaced and cannot work as the constitution which is a supreme law of the land is clear on the matter, People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) President Andyford Banda has said.

Mr Banda said the debate was baseless because the constitution clearly stated that a President who has been sworn into office twice could not re-contest but pave way for others.

He said in an interview that President Hakainde Hichilema has clearly stated that there is no third term and should therefore be supported by the people instead of making misplaced statements on the matter.

“The issue of the third term cannot work in Zambia, the dynamics cannot allow and Zambia is not a country where a President rules for more than two terms. The constitution is clear regarding this matter,” Mr Banda said.

He urged President Hichilema to ignore people making such misguided statements and focus on ensuring that the expectations of Zambians were met.

He stated that no matter how the head of State would deliver on his campaign promises, going beyond two terms would not work because it was not provided for in the constitution.

Mr Banda urged Zambians to encourage the President and his administration to quickly strengthen the constitution.

“No matter how he is going to deliver, his focus must be to ensure that he meets people’s expectations during his first term then Zambians will judge him based on his performance and decide whether to give him a second term or not but not the third term,” Mr Banda said.
