LIFESTYLE AUDIT NEEDED TO STOP EXTRAVAGANCE – KATEKA

By KETRA KALUNGA

ZAMBIA should implement a lifestyle audit to guide against over extravagance witnessed from some public officials so that they live within their means, New Heritage Party (NHP) President, Chishala Kateka has said.

Ms. Kateka said in an interview that auditing the lifestyle of those in positions of leadership was one way in which corruption would be fought as it would compel those serving in senior government positions to be transparent and accountable.

She however said there was nothing wrong with owning a lot of wealth but that it must tie up with one’s income and not the opposite.

“We have people who have property that you even wonder what their source of income is, so this should be implemented.  This used to happen in the Kaunda days where people had to declare their wealth and it was called the leadership code,” she said.

Ms. Kateka was commenting on former Attorney General, Musa Mwenye’sstatement on ZNBC Sunday Interview that those holding government positions should be subjected to a lifestyle audit.

Mr. Mwenye said those who held senior positions in government and those currently serving should not be sensitive to being asked questions about the wealth they have and how they acquired it because there is nothing wrong with transparency.

He said a lifestyle audit is one way in which corruption could be fought especially when law enforcement agencies have no evidence against people in senior government positions suspected to be involved in corruption.
