Unregistered drivers take over taxi business – Kamuti
By KALOBWE BWALYA
UNLICENSED transporters have taken over business from registered transport operators following the suspension of roadblocks, Commuter Rights Association of Zambia president Aaron Kamuti has said.
Mr Kamuti has since called on the minister of Home Affairs, Mr Jack Mwiimbu to engage RTSA so that unregistered transporters now resorting to illegal activities could be stopped.
He said vehicles that were not registered for public transportation had now taken over business.
Mr Kamuti said vehicles that were not road worthy had also been seen illegally carrying passengers.
He said in as much as the move to ban roadblocks was welcome, there was need for measures to curtail any illegality.
“Pirating has now taken centre stage at the expense of registered transporters,” said Mr Kamuti.
He also said although roadblocks and check points have been suspended, areas like Kabangwe police check point was still operating, and police should therefore impound such vehicles once noticed.
He said the situation is becoming unbearable because people have taken advantage of the situation to operate illegal taxis.
“Government should quickly put up mechanisms that will deter unlicensed drivers from moving on the road because they are a threat to human life,” Mr Kamuti advised.
Ends.
