Drivers end blockade, start crossing borders
By ANDREW MUKOMA
TRUCK drivers who had stopped and parked their trucks at Kazungula border post, Kazungula district have started crossing into Botswana heading to South Africa, their delivering destinations.
Earlier this week, hundreds of Zambian trucks carrying goods bound for South Africa were marooned at the Kazungula border with drivers refusing to complete deliveries.
This followed reports of insecurity in that county.
The drivers feared that they would be met with the reported xenophobic attacks in South Africa targeting drivers driving South African trucks number plated.
Southern Africa Development Community Truck Drivers Association (SADC-TDA) secretary general Kaiko Wamunyima confirmed the development to the Daily Nation in Livingstone.
Mr Wamunyima said the drivers were more worried about their safety and their lives.
“The situation is calm, and the drivers have started moving,” he said.
He has further maintained that employers of drivers in the region must improve their condition of service so that they can get jobs in their home countries.
