TEACHERS PRESSURE GROUP HAPPY WITH GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION

By JOHN KOMNBE

THE Teacher Revolutionary Movement (TEREMO) is happy that the government has heard their cries and has since moved in to engage the teachers’ unions on various matters of concern raised by the teachers.

TEREMO national coordinator, Steward Bwembya disclosed that the government through the ministry of Labour met the unions and his organization to hear their concerns.

He said that the meeting which was convened by the LabourCommissioner was very fruitful.

He therefore thanked the government for hearing the cries of the teachers and  said that government intervention in such matters was commendable as it helps to avert disruption of service delivery.

Mr Bwembya assured the teachers countrywide that their grievances were being attended to but  declined to disclose the full details of the meeting.

“We do here by advice our teachers countrywide that the information will only be released with consultation from the Teaching Council of Zambia as guided during the stakeholders’ meeting,” he said. He said that the guidance of the Teaching Council of Zambia will determine the extent to which teachers are allowed to talk about union matters on issues of accountability and transparency.

Mr Bwembya noted that the movement was pleased with the deliberations of the meeting and the guidance from the Labourcommissioner.

He however insisted that the unions had for a long time taken advantage of the teachers by not disclosing their emoluments among other things.

He pointed out that six teachers’ unions had abrogated the law in many instances and this cannot be ignored.
