GOVERNMENT says it will be cautious and sensitive on the exportation of maize going forward following the prevailing dry weather conditions so as not to disturb the food security.
The Meteorological Department of Zambia yesterday announced that the country will for the next 10 days continue to experience a dry spell and advised farmers in some parts of the country not to start planting their crops.
Agriculture Minister Mtolo Phiri said the government will be careful in its export of maize so as not to allow a situation where the country runs out of maize if the low rainfall pattern persists.
Mr. Phiri has however assured of food security stating that the country has sufficient stock in the strategic reserves complemented by the private sector reserves.
Meanwhile, Mr Phiri urged farmers not to panic following the dry spells being experienced but instead become sensitive to the changing climatic conditions.
He has advised farmers to instead start looking at getting early maturing to middle maturing seeds so as to become climate smart.
