A FORENSIC pathologist has testified that public prosecutor Nsama Nsama Chipyoka died a violent death, with the left and right upper parts of the heart completely severed.
University Teaching Hospital (UTH) forensic pathologist Dr. Luchenga Adam Mucheleng’anga, said this yesterday when he testified in a case where police officer, Fanwell Nyundu, 25, is charged with two counts of murder over the shooting to death of Mr. Nsama and UPND supporter Joseph Kaunda on December 23, 2020.
This ensued in a scuffle between the police and UPND cadres when then opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema appeared at the police headquarters for questioning.
Dr. Mucheleng’anga told High Court Judge Joshua Banda that he was absolutely sure that the cause of Mr. Nsama’s death was a gunshot wound, within reasonable medical certainty.
He said this was after he conducted a medicolegal death investigations on Mr. Nsama and Kaunda’s bodies of which postmortem examination was part of the process on December 25, 2020.
He said before conducting the investigation, he visited the scene in the company of police officers and Mr. Nsama’s National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) co- workers who indicated to him where their colleague might have been standing and that Kaunda was running on the road leading from Independence Avenue to Ministry of Works and Supply gate.
Dr. Mucheleng’anga said he then went back to UTH mortuary for a postmortem examination and that his external examination on Mr. Nsama showed that his clothes were soiled in blood.
He said after removing the deceased’s clothes, he saw that he had a gunshot to the right side of his chest.
Dr. Mucheleng’anga said his examination showed that the bullet hit Mr. Nsama’s right side of the heart before coming out at the left side of the back.
He said the entry wound had an abrasion collar while the exit wound had rib bones broken outward. Dr. Mucheleng’anga added that the left and right upper parts of the heart were completely severed by effect of the bullet.
He said he made every effort to recover the bullet from Nsama’s body after dissecting it but nothing was recovered.
He said the historical and circumstantial data he gathered from various sources are qualified by his postmortem findings. Trial continues.
