GOVERNMENT has clarified that all athletes who competed at the Zone V games in Lesotho have been paid their allowances contrary to reports that they have not been paid.
Some athletes on Thursday said they were still waiting for their allowances which are still being held by the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Sports and Arts.
But Ministry of Sport, Youth and Art Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe said the ministry released all the payments through his office which were paid out to the athletes’ accounts.
Chileshe however said that there was a challenge with processing of some payments for some athletes who do not have accounts but that payments were made to all those that provided accounts belonging to their next of kin guardians.
He added that those who did not provide account details would be paid once they avail their account numbers to the ministry through the Sports Council.
He said the government does not deal with cash but only pays through bank transfers to which was authorised through his office.
Zambia came out fifth at the regional games with athletics, women’s soccer and boxing minting gold in their categories.
