THE Zambia Centre for Inter-party Dialogue (ZCID) has condemned the thuggery behaviour by UPND cadres at Chelstone Police Station in Lusaka on Wednesday who destroyed property and assaulted PF members.
ZCID board chairperson, Jackson Silavwe said it was shocking that the cadres could gather courage without fear and begin to commit crime within the premises of an institution mandated to maintain law and order in the country.
“We are concerned and would like to condemn that level of lawlessness in the strongest possible terms,” Mr Silavwe said.
He warned that the unruly behaviour by political party supporters if not quickly curbed had the potential to turn the country into a war zone.
Mr Silavwe urged the Zambia Police to investigate and ensure that everyone who was involved is brought to book swiftly.
He said such actions were a red flag and must be dealt with immediately in order to prevent it from becoming a common trend in the future.
Mr Silavwe also urged all political party leaders to take deliberate actions and begin to educate their members that the country has sufficient laws in place to address all issues that may be of concern to any aggrieved citizen.
He said it must be clear to all political party members especially to the young people that no individual should at any point attempt to take the law into their own hands.
Mr Silavwe explained that every Zambian needed to realise the importance of peace and start to respect the pronouncements that were issued by President Hakainde Hichilema that government institutions would work independently without anybody’s interference.
He r urged all political players to continue providing sound and objective checks and balances to the new administration in order to ensure that the interests of the Zambian people are prioritised.
He said leaders of political parties should aim to be relevant in providing solutions to the nation and position themselves to be role models to the younger generation.
