CLINICAL OFFICER DROWNS ON LAKE KARIBA

A clinical officer has drowned on Lake Kariba just few days after six members of the Seventh Day Adventist who were camping in the resort town perished after jumping from a moving Kapenta fishing boat.
Siavonga district commissioner, Geoffrey Jakopo, who confirmed the incident, identified the victim as Boniface Mwansa, a clinical officer at Nabutezi rural health post in chief Simamba area.
He said Mr Mwansa, who was in the company of the owner of the canoe, met his fate yesterday at around 06:00 hours as he was going to see a business partner on the other side of Lake Kariba in Gwena area.
Meanwhile, the owner of the canoe and survivor, Friday Phiri narrated to the Daily Nation that due to bad weather, water from a strong wave entered the canoe forcing them to jump off into the lake.
He said it was at that moment that the man failed to swim to shore.
The body of the victim has not yet been recovered but a combined team of local divers, Zambia police, Zambia Army and some divers from Yalelo fish farm have been deployed to the area to combo the lake for the body.
