Govt constitutes disaster response team

Government  has constituted an urgent disaster response team the tackle the current flood situation in Choma.

Speaking during an emergency meeting at his office, Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Monze said urgent Disaster response measures were needed.

Dr. Monze said some residential areas in Choma remain submerged in water due   heavy in rains in the area.

Revealing that some families have been severely affected and that there is need for urgent government attention, the Permanent Secretary said he was happy that the response team that has been constituted will not only carry out a rapid assessment of the flood situation but also help unblock residences that remain submerged.

He has further disclosed that some engineers from ZESCO, Road Development Agency (RDA) and Southern Water and Sanitation Company (SWASCO) have been deployed in severely hit areas in the district.

And Choma District commissioner,  Gamela Sikaleya,  told ZANIS in Choma yesterday that the flood situation in the district was serious.

Mr. Sikaleya said most of the houses that have been affected are those in unplanned residential areas citing those that have been built along the river beds. – ZANIS
