Solwezi baby snatcher nabbed

By JACKSON MAPAPAYI

A 30-YEAR-OLD woman of Kimakolwe compound in Solwezi has been arrested for allegedly stealing a 17-month-old baby.

North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Dr Fred Mulenga said the suspect, Josephine Liyoka was arrested on Thursday morning.

Dr Mulenga said Liyoka was arrested after a woman in the neighbourhood, Ms Judith Chishimba reported that there was a woman keeping a child who doesn’t belong to her.

Dr Mulenga said according to Ms Chishimba, she had advised the suspect to return the child to the owner but that the suspect couldn’t heed the advice.

“After she reported the matter to the crime prevention unit, the officers managed to rescue the baby and apprehended the suspect,” said Dr Mulenga.

On being questioned, Liyoka claimed that she found the baby on the road and picked her.

Dr Mulenga said the child has been surrendered back to the mother identified as Ms Mary Kazadi of Kyawama compound who said she was abducted whilst playing within the yard with friends.

He said Ms Kazadi only discovered that her child was missing when the rains started.

“According to Ms Kazadi, she tried to look around but to no avail. And that’s how she reported to Kyawama police station,” Dr Mulenga said.
