Declare national health crisis, Govt urged

By SIMON MUNTEMBA

FOLLOWING the revelation that the country’s health system is on the verge of collapsing, Government must declare a national health crisis and initiate emergency procedures to revive the health system, a leader from the opposition has advised.

Golden Party Zambia president, Jackson Silavwe said the revelation that Government has not been able to procure essential medicines for public health facilities in the past six months is disastrous.

He was reacting to revelation by the Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) president, Dr Brian Sampa that the health system was on the verge of collapsing.

Mr Silavwe said lack of medicines in public health facilities was causing premature deaths and curtailing productivity.

“It is for this reason we call on the new dawn administration to declare a national health crisis and initiate emergency procedures to revive our health system. Our public health system must save lives, not take them away,” Mr Silavwe said.

Efforts to get a comment from Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo proved futile as she was unreachable by press time.
