Two ZAF officers die in plane crash

TWO Zambia Air Force (ZAF) officers died on the spot after the plane they were in crashed in Makunka Sihumbwa area.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Alfred Nawa said the accident occurred yesterday around 11:20 when their ZAF Plane Flight Number AF 545 crashed.

Mr Nawa said on board was the Station Commander Colonel Lyson Siame aged 41 of Voucher Street, Dambwa North Extension and Second Lieutenant Kalasa Bwalya aged 28, a student pilot of Livingstone ZAF Air base.

“The bodies of the two have since been retrieved from the accident scene and and taken to Batoka Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” he said.

Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema in a Facebook post said he had learnt with sadness and shock the tragic accident in Kazungula, which had claimed the lives of the two officers.

The President said his thoughts and prayers were with the families of Col Siame and Second 2Lt Bwalya, as they come to terms with their profound loss.

He said he had joined the armed forces and the nation as it reflected on the service and sacrifice provided by the men and women in uniform.
