Government stance on incarcerated Mumbi Phiri is clear indication that the UPND administration has failed to practice what they preach, lawyer Lazarus Chisela has said.
Mr Chisela who is also Zambia United for Suitable Development (ZUSD) president said the UPND administration was doing the exact thing that they used to call injustice when they were still in the opposition.
He said the excuse they were giving was that for people to be put on the cause list based on first come first serve basis does not make sense and does not translate into fair trial because Ms. Phiri was arrested five months ago.
Mr Haimbe recently said there was nothing irregular about the continued detention of Ms. Phiri because she was charged with murder which was a non-bailable offence.
He said Mrs. Phiri was facing a capital offence and like any other in her situation, was waiting for appearance in court and the process was called cause list which was based on first come in, first out basis.
But Mr Chisela said there was a reason why there were speculations that UPND just wanted to punish Ms. Phiri by keeping her inside without taking her before the law.
He said Ms Phiri must appear before the law so that justice must be established if she was guilty or not guilty.
“For her to remain in prison for such a long time without trial is not fair,” he said.
