Eagles terminate Chiyangi’s contract

AFTER sending head coach Aggrey Chiyangi and his assistant Rotson Kilambe on   30 days forced administrative leave, Green Eagles FC have terminated the contract of the duo following the clubs recovery in the MTN/FAZ Super League where they are now competing among the top eight teams.

Green Eagles disclosed in a statement issued before yesterday’s Military derby against Red Arrows that it had parted ways with Chiyangi and Kilambe who were appointed as head coach and assistant in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

After their appointment, the duo had transformed the Choma based FAZ Super League side into a top four team that qualified for the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

However a poor start to the 2022/2023 soccer season saw the Zambia National Service (ZNS) sponsored outfit lose their patience and eventually sent Chiyangi and Kilambe on administrative leave.

After over a month of sending the former Power Dynamos and Chipolopolo legend and his assistant on administrative leave the club has finally announced the end of a five year marriage making Chiyangi a free agent.

“Green Eagles Football Club has officially terminated the contract for head coach Aggrey Chiyangi and assistant Rotson Kilambe with immediate effect,” the club stated in a statement.

“Mr. Chiyangi and his counterpart have been with the club from 2017 and 2019 respectively. Interim head coach Alex Namazaba will continue in his capacity until further notice.

“The sponsors and GEFC management would like to thank Mr. Chiyangi and Mr Kilambe for their services and wish them the very best in their future endeavors.”

From the 14th position with seven points, Chiyangi had left them with, Eagles are now among the top teams fighting to finish the first round of the FAZ Super League in the top six bracket to qualify for the ABSA Cup which features top six Super League teams and top two national division one teams.

Chiyangi will however be remembered for having guided Green Eagles to a maiden CAF Confederations Cup appearance after finishing the 2018 soccer season on fourth position.

Green Eagles also came close to winning the FAZ Super League Title in 2019 when they finished second to qualify for the CAF Champions league were they faced and eliminated South African giants Orlando Pirates in the Preliminary round of the continents prestigious club championship.
