Kwacha depreciation worries fruits sector

FRUITS and Vegetables Association of Zambia President Bernard Sikunyongana has expressed concern with the continued depreciation of the Kwacha which he says is likely to trigger an upward adjustment in commodity prices.

Mr. Sikunyongana says there is need therefore for the government to ensure that the Kwacha does not go beyond K17 as it will lead to an upward adjustment in the prices of fruits and vegetables.

Mr. Sikunyongana however says this year has favourably been good for the sector due to the appreciation of the stability of the local currency for some time before the current depreciation.

He says as a result, many farmers ventured into the fruit and vegetables business, a situation that has been encouraging for the sector.
