LUMEZI independent Member of Parliament Munir Zulu has been arrested and  slapped with fresh charges arising from his alleged utterances after being released from detention last week.

Police deputy spokesperson Dany Mwale said the police arrested and charged Mr. Zulu aged 35 of Meanwood Ndeke area for the offence of expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of origin or colour contrary to section 70 (1) of the penal code chatter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

Mr Mwale said the arrest was in connection with the alleged utterances he made on March 28, 2023 at Longacres police post car park after he was released from police custody.

He said Mr. Zulu has been released on police bond pending court appearance. And in  a letter written by the police to Prime TV, the police demanded that the station helps with video footage of Mr Zulu which was aired on March 28 2023.

“In view of the above, we request for a video footage which was aired on March 28 2013 by your Television depicting honourable Munir Zulu’s interviews immediately after his release on Police Bond on Friday last week.  This will enable us conclude the investigations and put the matter to its logical conclusion. Kindly note this office further requests to record a statement from staff that will be assigned on this matter,” officer in charge of the Anti-Fraud Unit Mr Pandwe wrote. Mr Zulu however indicated that he had been made aware of this document through different media houses that have circulated it.

He said it was interesting to note that the perpetrators of hate speech, tribal practices are always playing victim by merely mentioning the villages of their region. “The card of being victims when you are the perpetrators has been played for far too long by colleagues,” he said.

“Using the state apparatus to have me victimised won’t change my opinion about a certain sect of this country. You cannot be the same group of people all the time claiming to be victims of hate speech when you have been calling others   thieves. You cry victims of non-hate speech and promote any criticism about yourselves to mean tribalism.  That’s cheap and petty,” he said.
