ZAMBIA’S fastest woman Rhoda Njobvu has won silver at the 2023 Heino Lipp Memorial in Estonia after finishing second in the women’s 200m final.
Njovu clocked a record of 23:47s to secure a podium finish in the race which was dominated by Lorraine Martins of Brazil who won silver after clocking 22.99s.
Ann Marii Kivika of Estonia scooped bronze after sprinting to a time 23.51 seconds in the race.
Earlier, Njobvu had missed out on a podium finish in the women’s 100m race after she finished fourth in 11:47s.
Meanwhile, 200-meters sprinter Patrick Nyambe won silver at the 2023 Heino Lipp Memorial after finishing second in the men’s 200m race.
Nyambe sprinted to a personal best record of 20.80 seconds. He however missed out on gold which went to Brazilian sprinter Lucas Da Silva by 13 milliseconds.
Nyambe outrun Oscars Grava and Kenmark Minkovski who finished third and fourth respectively in the men’s 200 meters final.
Nyambe and Njovu’s impressive performances in Estonia caught the eye of Minister of Sports Youth and Arts Elvis Nkandu who congratulated the duo over their performance.
“Congratulations to Zambia’s fastest woman Rhoda Njobvu for minting the silver medal at the 2023 Heino Lipp Memorial in Estonia after finishing in second position in the women’s 200m with a time of 23:47 seconds,” Nkandu said.
“Congratulations to yet another 200 meters sprinter Patrick Nyambe for minting silver,” he said.
Njovu and Nyambe’s impressive showing follows an impressive run by Zambia’s fastest 400 meters specialist Muzala Samukonga who sprinted to second in the 400 meters race on his first appearance at the Diamond League in Oslo, Norway on Friday Night.
Samukonga, the 2022 Commonwealth Games champion and current world leader with a time of 43.91 seconds, had to settle for second place with a time of 44.49 seconds.
Samukonga, who is considered as a world leader lost the race to South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk, currently the second-fastest athlete in the world this season.
