POLICE in Matero on Thursday gunned down one of the most wanted and notorious criminal Duncan Mwaba.
Mwaba, who was affectionately known as “Shimpundu” was on a mission to break into a shop at Twikatane Mall in Zingalume when he met the police’s bullets after trying to evade a capture.
Rae Hamoonga, the police spokesperson said in a statement that following tips from the public, police waylaid one of the members of Mwaba’s gang which had been terrorising residents of the area.
Mr Hamoonga said police managed to arrest Charles Daka, 31, of Matero who led them to his accomplice Mwaba.
Police found explosives on Daka which were to be used in the robbery.
“Upon interrogation, Daka revealed that he was scheduled to meet the deceased to plan their criminal activities. Based on this information, an ambush was set in SOS area on November 28, 2024. When confronted by officers, the deceased attempted to flee. Despite officers firing three warning shots, the suspect persisted in evading arrest. In the ensuing pursuit, the suspect was shot but continued to flee,” Mr Hamoonga said.
He said the public alerted police that the injured suspect was hiding in the flowers in the SOS area where he was found bleeding profusely and died when he reached Matero Level One Hospital.
Mr Hamoonga said investigations revealed that the group, including the deceased, was involved in multiple robberies, including, Zanaco Express – Chibombo, Pep Store – Kitwe, Puma Filling Station – Choma, Agora Loans Company – Kalomo, Marcopolo Tiles Agent – Chipata.
The criminals were allegedly plotting to target a shop at Twikatane Mall – Zingalume, Natsave Bank – Chilenje, Western Union – Kalomo and Chililabombwe DAPP.
“The suspects’ modus operandi involved stealing explosives to blow up safes during their robberies,” Mr Hamoonga said.
