UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema should conduct himself in a lawful manner and stop masquerading as President of Zambia or face arrest for treason, Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has warned.

Mr Kampyongo said Mr Hichilema was a desperate man who wanted to remain relevant to his political party by playing tactics.

Speaking when he featured on the PF Interactive Forum in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Kampyongo said that Mr Hichilema was stearing the country into anarchy and his ministry would not sit back and watch this happening especially that President Edgar Lungu had been recognised as republican President by the United Nations.

Mr Kampyongo said Mr Hichilema’s stance to continuously refute and mislead the masses that he would be sworn in as republican President, was treasonable.

“We will soon move in and start arresting those who have been inciting the public that there will be a second inauguration because what HH is doing is causing anarchy in the country and as a responsible Government, we will not allow that,” he said.

It is a treasonable offence for someone to masquerade as another president and would not allow this country to be hijacked by few individuals who think that their little money in their pockets might mislead anyone.

“Those that have been misled should know that we are not going to tolerate such distractors to continue. We have a country to run and the President is already at state houses,” said Mr Kampyongo.

Mr Kampyongo, however, applauded Chilanga member of Parliament Keith Mukata, who is a lawyer by profession, for deciding not to be part of the 52 UPND MPs that absconded President Lungu’s address to Parliament a fortnight ago.

“Some opposition leaders like Edith Nawakwi, Mike Mulongoti, Felix Mutati, Godfery Miyanda despite being critical of Government are different from Hichilema’s  behaviour as they understand operations of Government, Parliament and extensively all the arms of government,” he said.
