KEEPERS Zambia Foundation will implement a US$ 68,000 waste management project in Ng’ombe and Chipata compounds of Lusaka which will have over 100, 000 beneficiaries, Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) communications and outreach manager John Kunda has said.

Dr. Kunda said that MCA had given nine grantees a grant amounting to US$ 3 million for pro-poor service delivery in Lusaka.

He said that the innovation grant program was one of the institutional support activities of Lusaka Water Supply, Sanitation and Drainage Project (LWSSDP).

Dr. Kunda pointed out that MCA had given Keepers Zambia Foundation over US$ 60, 000 for a sustainable solid waste management project in Lusaka’s Chipata and Ng’ombe compounds.

He explained that the project would build business capacity in organisations by establishing a sustainable framework and employing a cost sharing mechanism.

Dr. Kunda said that the project which would be implemented in the two compounds would have about 12, 600 direct and 100, 000 indirect beneficiaries.

“We have given US$ 68, 880 to Keepers Zambia Foundation for a waste management project in Chipata and Ng’ombe compound. The project will have 12, 600 direct and 100, 000 indirect beneficiaries,” he said.

Dr. Kunda said that the project would result in about 100 people being employed to manage waste management ventures.

He emphasized that a cost sharing revolving fund mechanism would be established to support waste collectors to be profitable businesses.

He said that households would be able to buy two differently coloured bins to separate wet and dry waste.

He explained that recyclable waste would be sold to recycling companies and biodegradable waste would be dumped at the Chunga landfill.

Dr. Kunda said that all the funding was provided by the United States of America government through MCA.

Meanwhile, he has advised Lusaka residents not to throw litter in the Bombay drainage.
