LUSAKA City Council (LCC) should expedite demolition of illegal structures across the city as Kanyama constituency needs urgent attention in that regard, area Member of Parliament (MP) Elizabeth Phiri has charged.

Over the weekend, the council demolished some illegal structures along Tokyo way (Ring road) in Lusaka.

And Ms. Phiri said the local authority should expedite the process as some illegal structures had blocked major developmental projects in her constituency.

She said in an interview with the Daily Nation that she was eager to see to it that Kanyama was transformed within the shortest possible time.

Ms Phiri explained that road tarring projects, which had been embarked on around the constituency, had been halted because of illegal structures on road reserves.

She called on LCC to move in quickly as the rain season had already started and Kanyama needed to receive its fair share of development.

Ms Phiri said that the local authority should help her bring development to the constituency as she was not elected to enjoy tea in Parliament.

“If someone would say, as an area MP, come and receive strokes every morning which would be translated into development, I would happily do so. They beat me up and people get the social amenities.

“So LCC should expedite the demolition exercise as people want to see development now. Kanyama has lagged behind for too long,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Phiri said that in as much as there were some visible projects taking shape in Kanyama, she was looking forward to more development.

She said she had been busy looking for land where the mini civic centre would be built as the Minister of Local Government, Vincent Mwale announced that each constituency would have its own municipal council.

Ms Phiri expressed confidence that Kanyama would become the most outstanding constituency as it was already blessed with the country’s major industrial hub.
