CHINESE NATIONAL FINED K1, 800 FOR FAKE ‘BATA’ SHOES

THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has fined a 42-year-old Chinese national K1, 800 for allegedly being found in possession of shoes resembling a Bata Shoe Company trade mark.

This is in a matter which came up for facts and sentencing yesterday before magistrate David Simusamba.

Tang Weihua was charged with two counts of forgery of trademarks and sale of goods bearing aforged trade mark.

It is alleged that, Tang Weihua  was on September 25th 2017 found in possession of 2, 572 pairs of fake BATA branded shoes.

According to facts before court, a complaint was lodged on October 4th 2017 at Zambia Police Service Headquarters Intellectual Property Unit by Mr Octavia Bwalya as Director Merchandiser of Bata Shoe Company Lusaka, Zambia to the effect that some traders in Kamwala Market were selling counterfeit Bata branded shoes without the authority of Bata Shoe Company.

A team of police officers seized 2, 768 pairs of shoes worth K68, 800.00 when they executed an operation at Kamwala Market.

The accused person pleaded guilty to two charges and has since been fined K1, 800 by the Lusaka Magistrate’s court.
