ZRA slammed over failure to collect tax

FAILURE by the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) to collect K85.78 billion in tax arrears is sad and a serious matter which needs quick intervention because it directly affects the running of the country’s economy, political activist, Felix Bwalya, has said.

The auditor general’s report has revealed that ZRA failed to collect K85.78 billion in tax arrears for the financial year ended December 31st, 2021. 

Mr. Bwalya said it was unfortunate that ZRA, which had a huge mandate of collecting revenue on behalf of the government to finance its national programs was failing to effectively carry out its mandate.

He said in an interview that the revelations in the auditor general’s report were serious and the government should ensure that the loopholes are sealed.

Mr. Bwalya said the government should quickly establish the reasons why ZRA was failing to effectively collect tax and find solutions because the implication of their failure to work had serious effects on the country’s economy.

He said the role that ZRA plays in the running of the country’s economy is very important therefore quick solutions that would enable the authority operate effectively were needed.
