By AARON CHIYANZO

THE Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) needs urgent cleansing from the political and divisive tag it has earned as a mouthpiece of the opposition, Lusaka lawyer Tutwa Ngulube has charged.

And Mr Ngulube expressed happiness that the tenure on office of  LAZ president, Linda Kasonde’s administration was coming to an end this April.

The lawyer was incensed after learning that Ms Kasonde, now posing as Oasis Forum Chairperson had continued to castigate and undermine the PF government.

Ms Kasonde is alleged to have described the firing of Lucky Mulusa as well as the resigning of Harry Kalaba from government as a sign that corruption levels in the country had reached alarming levels.

Mr Ngulube was enraged that some sections of society, including government had labelled LAZ, a noble institution as a mouthpiece of opposition because of the biasness of the current leadership.

He reiterated that the tag LAZ had earned, had divided the association at a time when it should have been helping the nation develop a proper constitution without lacunas.

Mr Ngulube, who is Kabwe Central Member of Parliament charged that LAZ should be cleansed of the political tag it had earned as a result of a bogus leadership if it was to remain relevant and serve the purpose for which it was created.

“LAZ must cleanse itself of the political tag it has earned. It has been called a political mouthpiece for the opposition. The tag has divided the association at a time when we should be developing the constitution. Luckly, Linda Kasonde’s tenure is coming to an end in April, which is a relief,” he said.

Mr Ngulube said that regime change in LAZ was long overdue as the association was in desperate need of cleansing to save its face.

Meanwhile, Mr Ngulube explained that LAZ was expected to work with the government of the day but offer criticism when things are not working.

He pointed out that the association, which was created by an Act of Parliament was supposed to offer guidance on legal matters.

Mr Ngulube reiterated that it was outside the mandate, of the association to comment on political matters as had been the trend with Ms Kasonde’s administration.
